Curriculum Letter Year 4 - Summer Term
Dear Parents/Guardians

We hope that the children will enjoy their final term in Year 4, and to help you support them with their learning we would like to inform you of some of the units we will be covering this term.

English: Stories with historical settings, Persuasive texts, Stories from other cultures and Explanation texts.

Mathematics: Place value, mental strategies, formal methods for +, -, x, and /, problem solving, fractions and decimals, shape, telling the time and data handling.

Science: Habitats (which will include a visit to Brandon Marsh Nature Reserve) and Circuits and conduction.  (We decided to alter our plans in the Spring term and covered our Friction work instead of Habitats due the weather.)

Others:
History: Ancient Egyptians (including a planned visit to Rugby Museum)
ICT: Modelling effects on screen and branching databases.
Art/DT: Moving story books; Lighting it up
Games & PE : Athletics; Striking and fielding; Outdoor and adventurous activities.
RE: Caring for others and a fair world.
French: Pilot:  En-ville.
Music:  Pentatonic scales
PSHE:  Friendship, respect and cooperation.

May we remind you that children continue to need their PE and Games kits in school for the relevant days.  However it is useful for them to have kit in school all week as we sometimes need to rearrange our lessons according to the weather.
Children will usually be given homework every week. They will receive spellings and times tables on Mondays to be tested the following week. They will receive Maths tasks on the same day.  Other homework tasks will be set where appropriate.
Please also ensure that the children are given the opportunity to read to an adult at home at least three times a week for at least 15 minutes.  This time should consist of both reading and discussion of the text to ensure that they understand what they have read.  A broad variety of texts should be included eg fiction, information, instructions, football programmes, newspaper reports and magazine articles.
If you have any concerns regarding homework or any other issue, please let us know by writing a note or popping in to see us after school. (We are not available on Mondays as we have a staff meeting.)
Yours sincerely
Mrs H Brant
