June Newsletter

Welcome back for our final half term of the year.  To celebrate and begin the ‘World Cup Fever' event, we have decided to have a non-uniform day on Friday 11th June.  Children can come into school wearing their favourite football strip or wearing red & white to show support for England.

As part of our fundraising commitment, we are organising a sponsored swim on Saturday 3rd July.  We are hoping to raise funds for our school guitar teacher, Andy Walker, on his epic event of cycling from Lands End to John O'Groats in just 9 days.  He will also be climbing three peaks: Snowdon, Skafell Pike and Ben Nevis.  As he is hoping to raise funds in aid of Cancer Research we felt as a school we would like to support his efforts as best we can.  More details will follow in a separate letter.

Our PTFA has decided not to organise a Summer Fair this year, but will expand the PTFA Barbeque on Friday 16th July. All the usual things will be happening as well as one or two games and stalls and children in our new intake for September will also be invited. Details will be available soon from our PTFA. Please remember that children who wish to roller-skate may bring their skates but not skate-boards.

This year's "holiday" with year six at Manor Adventure near Ludlow just before half-term was a highly successful week and all the children achieved personal goals, overcoming fears of climbing, abseiling, canoeing or caving. As always, I was extremely proud of our pupils and we were complimented on their impressive behaviour and the determination they showed even when they were unsure or worried about an activity. If you want to see more, there are photographs on the website.  I am busy organising next years' event and would like to set up a meeting for current year 5 parents on Wednesday 16th June at 3.40pm in the hall.  I will be available to answer questions you may have about the residential week.

We are becoming increasingly concerned with the number of children who are left unsupervised at the end of the school day waiting for their siblings at after school clubs.  We do not have the staff to commit to looking after these children. Can I remind parents that they are responsible for their children at the end of the school day unless they are attending an after school activity.  I am also concerned by the number of younger children climbing around the airport and the basketball posts.  Both have concrete floors and the basketball posts also have sharp metal edges, they are certainly not suitable climbing frames.  You may have noticed that the airport has been vandalised recently and we have stopped our pupils from entering as it is unsafe.  Is there any parent who could help to fix the brick work?  We would be really grateful for your help as this is a costly repair which we have already fixed many times!

We are sending out a plea for parents to check under beds and on top of wardrobes for any of our school books.  Our library is getting a little thin and we would appreciate any books returned, especially from year 6.

We have installed a new filtered drinking water cooler in upper school.  Please can you ensure that your child brings a water bottle into school, especially during these hot months.  However, if children take their bottle home to wash each evening (hygiene), it can be filled with cold water from home to start the day. Please remember that squash and juice are not allowed. They don't hydrate as well as water and drips and spillages make the tables, and the children's work, very sticky. Children are allowed sun-cream as long as it is administered at home. They should not bring it into school and ask someone to apply it. Effective sunhats are thoroughly recommended!

For those who pay by the half term, school lunches will be £57.80. Also, we also have a considerable number of parents who have not yet paid their swimming money. This is £35 for those still owing for the whole term, or £17.50 for just this half-term. Music fees are £40 if you have not yet paid these.  Please ensure these payments are made as soon as possible as all monies need to be balanced before end of academic year.

Can I remind parents that we will be having a whole school photograph taken on Monday 14th June in the afternoon.

Tesco vouchers are still being collected, can you please send them into school before Friday 18th June.

There will be a training day on Monday 12th July. This is the day when all staff meet to discuss the statistical issues for each child and to discuss their classes for the next year. This is followed by Induction Day when our new intake will visit for the day (Tuesday 13th July) followed by a meeting for new parents that same evening at 6.30pm. Details will be in the admissions pack coming soon. This is also the day when our Y6's go to visit their new schools. All the rest of our pupils will spend the day with their new class teacher.

Sports Day will be on Monday 19th July, with track events starting at 9.30am (in case it is hot!). Field events will take place in the afternoon - you will receive timings closer to the event.

Term ends on Friday 23rd July at 2.30pm. The Autumn term begins for the children on Tuesday 7th September at 8.50am.

On a final note, just to update parents on the situation in school.  Mr Alexander had hoped to try to come into school this half term but unfortunately he is not well enough to do so.  I have therefore decided that with this being the busiest time in the office with the transition of new intake and year 6 leaving, that I would not teach for the last few weeks.

***** SERIOUS INCIDENT******

Yesterday, we were very lucky not to have a serious incident on our hands.  As you are aware we had a downpour of rain at the end of the school day.  Pupils were trying to leave school  in a hurry and battling against umbrellas.  Unfortunately, some inconsiderate car drivers had parked directly outside of the school gates (on the zig-zag lines) waiting to pick up their child.  This meant that other cars were having to overtake them and it put our children at risk of harm.  The police have been informed and will hopefully patrol our gates at various times.

Although we endeavour to teach the children road safety we do need the support of our own families to ensure that they follow the highway code and park sensibly.  Please think carefully about where you stop and avoid any areas marked with yellow zig-zag lines!
